Girl Dies After Being Hit by Truck During Holiday Parade in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — News sites stated that a girl taking part in the procession was struck and killed by a truck towing a float on Saturday in North Carolina.

According to a news release from the Raleigh Police Department, the motorist who lost control of the car and ran over the youngster was detained and charged with reckless driving and other counts. Police identified the 20-year-old motorist as Landen Christopher Glass.

According to witnesses who spoke to WTVD-TV, people watching the Raleigh Christmas Parade overheard the pickup truck driver screaming that he had lost control of the vehicle and could not stop it before the collision.

According to The News & Observer, the girl hit by the truck was a member of a dance group marching in the holiday parade.

A 14-year-old dancing group member named Olivia Bruce told the newspaper that the truck nearly struck her.

We began dancing in the parade until we suddenly heard a lot of honking. According to Bruce, the truck was practically on our backs when we turned around, so we turned away.

Christine Barnes, an eyewitness, told WRAL-TV that the females in the dancing group could not hear the truck’s driver over the music being played. She stated that adults were hurrying to get the kids out of the way of the truck.

Barnes remarked, “The girls were just hysterical.” It was pretty traumatic. According to Barnes, the truck narrowly avoided striking several other females.

Although the truck wasn’t moving very quickly, she explained that the girls couldn’t avoid it because they were unaware it was approaching. No other parade attendees were hurt as a result of the incident.

The crash led to the cancellation of the procession. Police warned drivers and pedestrians to stay away from the area. According to the authorities, the glass was one of three occupants in the car slowly dragging the float.

Glass, who was charged with misdemeanour death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving, using inappropriate equipment, moving in a hazardous manner, and carrying a firearm in a parade, was questioned by investigators.

The girl’s identities and ages weren’t immediately disclosed.

According to police, “our hearts go out to the victim’s family and everyone who witnessed this awful occurrence.”

Mayor of Raleigh Mary-Ann Baldwin sent her sympathies to the girl’s friends and family.

The mayor wrote, “Today started with such excitement. “My heart was overflowing. And now my heart breaks for the little child tragically injured on the parade route.
